Malaria in pregnancy

چکیده
Malaria in pregnancy (MiP) is a major, preventable cause of maternal morbidity and poor birth outcomes. To prevent the adverse outcomes of MiP, WHO recommends the use of insecticidetreated mosquito nets (ITNs), and effective case management of malaria and anaemia in pregnant women. In areas of moderate to high malaria transmission of sub-Saharan Africa, WHO also recommends intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp) with sulfadoxinepyrimethamine (SP). In recent years, an alternative preventive strategy – consisting of intermittent screening and treatment in pregnancy (ISTp) using rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) during antenatal care (ANC) visits – has been evaluated in several countries. Moreover, multiple studies have assessed the safety of using artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) in the first trimester of pregnancy. Based on this new evidence, WHO convened a group of experts to develop recommendations on the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of (ISTp) compared to IPTp-SP for prevention of MiP, and on the safety of ACTs in early pregnancy.

Clinical Pharmacology of the Antimalarial Quinine in Children
Quinine is the best studied drug for treating severe malaria in very young children. Quinine may be administered in pregnancy and, at therapeutic doses, malformations have not been reported. Some strains of quinine from Southeast Asia and South America have become resistant. Quinine is the treatment of choice for the drug-resistant severe Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial mechanism of qui...
متن کاملOutcome and Complications of Malaria in Pregnancy
Background: Malaria during pregnancy may affect the course adversely. The physiological changes of pregnancy and pathological changes due to malaria have a deleterious effect on each other. This trial was conducted to study the complications and outcome of malaria during pregnancy. Material & Methods: It was a prospective study carried out at District Headquarter Teaching Hospital, D.I.Khan, Pa...
متن کاملMalaria specific-IgG, inter-pregnancy intervals, birth weights and body mass index in cases of asymptomatic malaria parasitaemia.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Considerations of both inter-pregnancy intervals and malaria parasitaemia may help in understanding some aspects of susceptibility and pregnancy outcomes in malaria endemic areas. METHODS Pregnant women with asymptomatic malaria parasitaemia were recruited and divided into groups based on their inter-pregnancy intervals and malaria specific-IgG, body mass index, and bi...
متن کاملMalaria control aimed at the entire population in KwaZulu-Natal negates the need for policies to prevent malaria in pregnancy.
BACKGROUND South Africa has no policy to prevent malaria in pregnancy, despite the adverse effects of the disease in pregnancy. However, malaria control measures consisting of indoor residual spraying and specific antimalarial treatment have been in place since the 1970s. Information on the burden of malaria in pregnancy in South Africa is needed to indicate whether a specific policy for malari...
متن کاملNo Association of Phenotypic ABO Blood Group and Malaria during Pregnancy
In a few small studies an association between blood group O and placental malaria has been described. The relationship between blood group and malaria in pregnancy (Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum) was analyzed in 1,468 women from three longitudinal cohort studies in which weekly malaria screening was done systematically during pregnancy. One-third of women (447 of 1,468) had at leas...
متن کاملTreatment of Malaria Parasitaemia in Infants and their Mothers
Malaria is an infection sustained by three parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium ovale. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common and virulent parasite. These parasites are present in different areas of the sub-Saharan African countries and Asia. In 2010, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 660,000 deaths and, approximately, two-t...
